In pursuance of the Plan of the Bishops, the North Indiana Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church con- vened in its Seventy-first session in the First Methodist Epis- copal Memorial Church in the city of Mishawaka, Indiana, with Bishop William F. McDowell, D. D., LL. D., presiding.

Sacramental Service. — At 8.30 A. M., Bishop McDowell called the Conference to order and announced Hymn No. 255,

"Jesus spreads His banner o'er us."

After the singing of this hymn, the Bishop conducted the sacrament of the Lord's Supper, assisted by the District Su- perintendents and the pastor of the local Church. At the close of the sacramental service, at his request the Conference sang the hymn,

"Gracious God of all Creation,"

composed by Rev. T. C. Neal for this session of the Con- ference.

Deceased. — At the request of Bishop McDowell, the mem- bers of the Conference stood while the Secretary called the names of the following, deceased since the last session: Bishop Thomas Bowman, E. B. Brown, O. S. Harrison, L. D. Rehl, H. C. Smith, \\'. A. Fonts, and Almon Greenman. After the names had been called, the Bishop led the Confer- ence in singing' the hymns,

"There's a land that is fairer than day," and,

"Oh, how sweet it will be!"

Following this, the Bishop led in a very tender prayer for those who mourned their departure and for the Conference bereaved of their comradeship.

Organization. — On nomination of T. C. White, Dorie V. Williams was re-elected Secretary, with the privilege of nam- ing his assistants.

The Secretary then read the following resolution, which was adopted by a rising vote:

"Whereas, Rev. John C. White has sustained an official relation to this Conference for twenty-one years, and has requested the Secretary to relieve him from further duty on his stafif of assistants in order that he may enjoy the social privileges and the addresses of the Conference; therefore be it

"Resolved, That we assure him of our hearty appre- ciation of the services he has rendered in these dififerent ofBcial capacities, and tender him our most sincere thanks for the work he has performed for the Conference during this time. "D. V. Williams, F. S. Hickman,

On nomination of the Secretary, William A. Griest and Frank S. Hickman were confirmed as his assistants.

On nomination of Somerville Light, Francis A. Reichel- derfer was re-elected Statistical Secretary, and on his nomi- nation Charles M. Hobbs, Peter H. Walter, Warren W. Wiant, Clyde G. Yeomans, Leroy W. Kemper, and E. E. DeWitt were elected his assistants.

On motion of C. E. Line, David S. Jones was re-elected Treasurer, and upon his nomination Charles B. Dougherty,

Silas L. Gates, George F. Hubbartt, Conde A. Hile, G. B. Groxall, and James H. Richardson were elected as his assist- ants.

Efficiency Session. — The Bishop then made an announce- ment of the session upon the coming Friday to consider means of efficiency in the Conference, and he suggested that the Statistical Secretary and the Treasurer submit before that time a report on membership, growth or lack of growth ; membership in the Sunday Schools and conversions in the Sunday Schools ; and benevolences, increase or decrease.

Stewards. — Upon motion of B. S. Hollopeter, L. M. Krider and Charles Tinkham were elected Stewards for three years.

B. S. Hollopeter read the list of the Conference Boards for the ensuing year. (See Conference Boards.) On his nomination, the following were elected Committee on Reso- lutions: G. D. Cleworth, G. R. Grose, K. H. Carlson, R. L. Semans, W. F. Smith.

C. E. Line called the attention of the Conference to the fact that for the first time in fifty years J. E. Ervin was com- pelled to be absent from the session on account of illness. On his motion, the Secretary was instructed to send him a night- letter conveying the kindly greetings of the Conference.

Bar. — On motion of W. D. Parr, the bar of the Confer- ence was made to include the first eight rows of seats.

Program. — On motion of S. Light, the program as printed was adopted as the official program, subject to necessary changes.

Auditing Committee. — On motion of B. S. Hollopeter, the following were constituted the Auditing Committee: E. L. Jones, C. B. Groxall, F. H. Cremean.

Conference History. — On motion of H. N. Herrick, the names of B. S. Hollopeter and J. A. Beatty were added to the Committee on Publishing Conference History.

M. S. Marble made a report on the disbursement of the Flood Fund, and requested that the account be audited by the Auditing Committee.

Methodist Review. — On motion of W. B. Freeland, W. M. Hollopeter was constituted a committee to solicit subscrip- tions for the Methodist Review.

Peru Church. — The Secretary read the following commu- nication from the < )fiicial Board of our Church in Peru, Ind. :

On motion of W. B. Freeland, the Auditing Committee was requested to report to the Secretary within two weeks of adjournment of Conference.

Fourteenth Question. — The Fourteenth Question, "JVas the Character of Each Preacher Bxamined?" was called. The character of J. A. Beatty, Superintendent of Fort W^ayne Dis- trict, was passed, and he read his report of the district. The Bishop then asked him, "Is there anything against any ef- fective elder in your district?" He answered, "There is noth- ing against any of them."

Reports. — On motion of L. ]M. Edwards, the pastors were requested to include in their verbal reports to the Confer- ence the three following items : Membership, gain or loss ; Benevolences, gain or loss; Western Christian Advocate, gain or loss.

Representation. — Dr. J. A. Mulfinger, Recording Secretary of the Board of Conference Claimants, was introduced and addressed the Conference in the interests of the Board. At the conclusion of the address he presented the Conference with a draft of $250, wdiich was turned over to the Confer- ence Board, of Stewards.

Fourteenth Question Resumed. — Wabash District was called, and M. S. Marble, the Superintendent, was passed in

character, and he reported the work of the district. The Bishop then asked him, "Is there anything against any ef- fective elder in your district?" and he answered, "There is nothing against any of them."

The Bishop said that it would be necessary for him to be absent on Friday, and that the administration for that day would be in the hands of Bishop Henderson. He explained that he desired to be present at the funeral of Dr. James Rowe, in Chicago, and dwelt with affection upon the noble

character of this departed man of God. F. M. Stone then moved that the District Superintendents be constituted a com- mittee to frame a suitable resolution to be carried by the Bishop in person to the family of Dr. Rowe. Carried.

At the request of the Bishop, the Conference Quartette sang" a selection as the closing number of the morning pro- gram. Chancellor Hamilton pronounced the benediction, and the Conference stood adjourned.

SECOND DAY.

Thursday Morning, April 2, 1914. Conference convened at 8.30 A. M., with Bishop McDowell in the chair. He announced Hymn No. 357,

"Forever here my rest shall be,"

at the close of the singing of which he requested the Con- ference to sing,

"I love to tell the story."

The Bishop then addressed the Conference on the impor- tance of the study of the Bible as a Book of Redemption, em- phasizing three points : the basis of the Bible, the purpose of it, and the outcome or result of its study. He closed the devotional hour with prayer.

Journal. — The Journal of yesterday's session was read and approved.

On motion of the Secretary, it was ordered that the further calling of the roll be omitted.

Delayed Reports. — In accordance with the action of the last session of this Conference, the Statistical Secretary and Treasurer of the Conference made report of the charges whose pastors had delayed handing their reports to these oi^cers on the lirst day of the session. On motion of W. D. Parr, the Secretary was instructed to send a message of greeting to Dr. Milton Mahin, who for many years has sustained a unique and distinct position with reference to this Conference.

Order of Day. — On motion of F. F. Thornburg, the con- sideration of Question 36, "Where shall the next Conference be held?" was made the Order of the Day for Saturday morning immediately after the reading of the Journal.

Drafts. — The Bishop presented the Conference with a draft on the Chartered Fund fOr $30, and on the Book Concern for $3,735, which drafts were indorsed and handed to the Treas- urer for the use of the Board of vStewards.

On motion of the Secretary, the following were constituted a Committee on Freedmen's Aid, to whom was referred a spe- cial communication : L. G. Jacobs, J. A. Ruley, John Phillips, F. M. Lacy, Roscoe Shaw, and G. W. Keisling. On motion of the same, a Committee on Army and Navy, consisting of C. B. Croxall, C. A. Modlin, and M. L. Transfers. — The Bishop then announced the transfer of W. M. Nelson to the Lidiana Conference, and of G. M. Mc- Bride to the Southern California Conference.

Preachers' Aid. — The time having arrived, according to Constitution of the Preachers' Aid Society for the annual meeting of that body, the Conference adjourned and the Preachers' Aid Society met, with Bishop McDowell in the chair.

C. U. Wade then read his report as Secretary, which was accepted and ordered to be spread upon the minutes.

On motion of W. W. Martin, R. J. Wade, Earle Naftzger, and O. A. Trabue were named as a committee to nominate officers for the Society for the coming year.

J. W. Cain then read his report as General Secretary, and offered the following amendment to the Constitution of the Preachers' Aid Society :

Article II, Section 2 — strike out Paragraph 3, namely: "The money received as dues or fees from the members of the Society."

Amend Article H by adding- Section 4: "The money received as dues or fees from the members of the Society, together with such other sums as may l)e designated for this purpose, shall constitute an Administration Fund, from which shall be paid the general expenses of the Society."

Upon motion of B. S. Hollopeter, the amendment was adopted.

On motion of C. U. Wade, J. W. Cain, G. B. Work, and H. N. Herrick were constituted a committee on the disburse- ment of the funds of the Society.

The Nominating" Committee presented their report, as follows: President, L. J. Naftzger ; \^ice-President, B. S. Hol- lopeter; Secretary, C. U. Wade; Treasurer, B. F. Shroyer; General Secretary, J. Motion of C. U. Wade was passed, that the General Sec- retary of the Preachers' Aid Society be employed on the same terms as last year, namely, $1,200 and expenses.

W. D. Parr made an enthusiastic address, urging the pas- tors of the Conference to support the work and plans of the Preachers' Aid Society.

Bishop McDowell followed with a short address, in which he urged with emphasis the loyal support of every pastor to the plans of the Conference with reference to the campaign for funds for the Preachers' Aid Society.

L. J. Naftzger moved that the resolutions adopted by the Board of Managers of the Preachers' Aid Society concerning the death of Treasurer J. W. Meeks be adopted and printed in the minutes. Motion carried. (See Resolutions.)

Conference Business Resumed. — The business having been completed, the Pieachers' Aid Society adjourned, and Confer- ence business was resumed, with Bishop McDowell in the chair.

Fourteenth Question Resumed. — The Fourteenth Ques- tion was resumed, and B. S. Hollopeter, Superintendent of the Logansport District, was passed in character and reported his

Chancellor Hamilton, of the American University, was in- troduced, and made an impressive address in reference to that institution, and announced its opening- for May 27, 1914.

Fourteenth Question.— Muncie District was called, C. E. Line, Superintendent, was passed in character, and he re- ported the district.

On motion of the Secretary the time was extended.

W. B. Freeland, for the Cabinet, read the following reso- lutions in reference to the death of Rev. James Rowe, of Chi- cago, which were adopted, and Bishop McDowell was re- quested to present them to the family of the deceased :

Introduction. — President L. H. Murlin, of Boston Univer- sity, was introduced, and presented the greetings of the uni- versity to the Conference.

On motion of S. Light, the case of T. F. Freeh was re- ferred to the Committee on Conference Relations and also to the Board of Stewards as necessitous.

Blaine Kirkpatrick, of the Northwest Indiana Conference, was introduced to the Conference and spoke briefly in the in- terest of the Epworth League Institute, urging the pastors to send their young people to its sessions.

Introduction. — The following were introduced : Thomas Nicholson, Corresponding Secretary of the Board of Educa- tion ; \J. G. Leazenby and Aaron Wood, District Superintend- ents in the Northwest Indiana Conference, and Harry L. Davis, a member of the same Conference ; Harry King, Presi- dent of Moores Hill College, and Fred B. Fisher, Secretary of the Laymen's Forward Movement.

The pastor made announcements, the long-meter doxology was sung, and the Conference adjourned with the benediction pronounced by S. C. Miller.

Morning Session.

Friday, April 3, 1914. Conference convened at 8.30, with Bishop McDowell in the chair. He led the Conference in singing the hymn,

"A charge to keep I have."

He then announced Hymn No. 539,

"Awake, my soul."

He then spoke upon the subject, "The Church as the Agent of Redemption." At the close of the devotional hour he an- nounced that the regular business of the Conference for the day would be waived, but that the Conference would be in session and consider an efficiency program. S. H. Kirkbride was introduced and discussed the work of the American Bible Society. The Bishop asked the Con- ference to stand and sing- Hymn 200,

After singing of this, Thomas Nicholson, Corresponding- Secretary of the Board of Education, addressed the Confer- ence in the interest of that work.

was sung. The Statistical Secretary reported that there had been an increase in the probationers and full members in the Conference of 4,962.

F. D. Bovard addressed the Conference in the interest of the Board of Home Missions and Church Extension.

North Indiana Conference Quartette sang,

and in response to an enthusiastic encore sang,

"What did He do?"

Bishop Oldham delivered a ringing address on the work of the Board of Foreign Missions. This was followed by a prayer by Somerville Light.

Bishop Henderson then asked the Conference to stand and sing H3'mn 653,

The Bishop spoke briefly on some special phases of work of the Freedmen's Aid Society.

The Conference Quartette sang,

Fred B. Fisher was then introduced and discussed "The New Financial Plan — What It Is and What It Does." This was followed b}^ U. G. Leazenby, Superintendent of Craw- fordsvile District, Northwest Indiana Conference, who pre- sented the subject, "Launching the New Plan." This was followed by the quartette singing

At the request of the Bishop the Conference stood and sang Hymn No. 490,

F. J. Michel, Field Secretary of the Laymen's Missionary Movement, spoke upon the Lake Geneva Convention that is to be held the approaching summer, urging the attendance of preachers and laymen.

In response to the request of the Bishop for the District Superintendents to make four-minute addresses upon the new financial plan in relation to its effect upon the districts, M. S. Marble, J. A. Beatty, W. B. Freeland, B. S. Hollopeter, C. E. Line, and S. Light made enthusiastic reports of the work accomplished in their districts.

In response to a motion for the appointment of a commit- tee to work out the Conference Policy on the New Plan of Finance, the Bishop appointed R. J. Wade, W. W. Martin, and C. H. Smith.

On motion of the Secretary, it was ordered that when we adjourn, we adjourn to meet at 7.30 this eveuing- in Confer- ence session.

On motion of the Secretary, Conference adjourned, and the benediction was pronounced by Bishop Henderson.

Evening Session.

Friday, April 3, 1914.

Conference convened at 7.30 P. M. in pursuance of the hour fixed by adjotu'nment. Bishop Henderson presiding.

He requested F. Watson Hannan, Professor of Pastoral Theology in Drew Theological Seminary, to take charge of the devotions. Professor Hannan announced Hymn 415,

"Faith of our fathers,"

and offered prayer.

Evening Theme. — The theme for the evening discussion was, "The Call of the Total Task."

A large chorus of men from Warsaw sang "Prepare ye the way. of the Lord" and, in response to an enthusiastic en- core, "Loyalty to Christ," accommodated to "Warsaw for Christ."

The reports from the meetings held by the dififerent dis- tricts immediately following the adjournment of the after- noon session showed that the new financial plan had been adopted by each district, and that the plan would be in opera- tion in practically every charge in the Conference for the coming year.

il. We call upon our laymen to do house-to-house, hand-to-hand \\'ork to bring the people of their communi- ties to a decision for Christ, to attend the regular ap- pointed means of grace, to read the Word of God, and to establish the family altar in every home.

III. We heartily indorse the new financial plan, and urge its adoption in every Church as the uniform system throughout the Conference for next year.

IV. We recommend a thorough educational campaign on the methods and merits of this plan in every Church during the year.

1. We further recommend that the District Superintend- ents give instructions and support to the plan in the first Quarterly Conferences, to which all the offtcials shall be especially urged to come, and seek to make each set of officials acquainted with the details of the plan.

2. We heartily indorse the group plan of holding one-day missionary campaigns in each charge of the Confer- ence, and we pledge ourselves to co-operate earnestly and honestly with the plans of the District Superin- tendents and district missionary secretaries in arrang- ing and holding these group meetings.

3. We recommend that Sunday, March 7, 191 5, or some day that week, be known as Field Day of the Confer- ence, and that on that day the "every-member can- vass" be made in every Church in the Conference.

Bishop McDowell expressed his thanks to Bishop Hender- son for the service he had rendered the Conference in pre- siding over it during the day, and prophesied that great things vv^ould result from the program of the day.

Bishop Henderson then delivered the address of the even- ing on the subject, "The Previous Question."

At the close of the address he asked the Conference Quar- tette to lead the audience in singing

He read for a Scripture lesson the Gospel according to John, twenty-first chapter, beginning at the fifteenth verse, and addressed the Conference on the subject, "Our Care of the Flock of Christ." Prayer was offered by Dr. W. F. Oldham.

Journals. — The Journals of the session of Thursday and all the sessions of Friday were read and approved.

Resolution. — The following resolution was read by L. J. Is^aftzger and, on motion, adopted :

Transfer. — The Bishop announced the transfer of Fred B. Fisher from the New England Conference to this Conference.

The Bishop, with the assistance of the District Superin- tendents and others, ordained them Elders. He then called to the altar all whom he had this afternoon ordained, together with their wives or parents, or the pastors who had led them to Christ, and led in an impressive consecration service of song, after which the benediction was pronounced by H. A. Gobin.

Morning Session.

Monday, April 6, 1914.

Conference convened at 8.30 A. M., with Bishop McDowell in the chair. He asked the Conference to join in singing the hymns, "O, happy day," "I love Thy Kingdom, Lord."

For a Scripture lesson the Bishop read from the Gospel according to Luke 3:10-14. After commenting on these verses in a very profitable manner, he asked L. J. Naftzger to lead in prayer.

Journal. — The Journal of the sessions on Saturday and Sunday were read and approved.

On motion of C. E. Line, the Conference requested the Bishop tO' reappoint Fred B. Fisher to his present position.

On motion of the same, the Bishop was requested to ap- point Hubert Webster Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds of DePauw University.

Printing Journal. — On motion of L. J. Naftzger, the Secre- tary was ordered to have printed five thousand copies of the

transactions of this Conference session, together with reports and statistics, as the Official Journal, and to distribute the same to the districts, pro rata with the number of members in full connection, and to send a copy of the same to each retired minister living within the bounds of the Conference, and a copy to each Conference widow.

On motion of M. S. Marble, the Bishop was requested to appoint M. Swadener to be Assistant General Superintendent of the Anti-Saloon League for Indiana,

L. J. Naftzger moved that the Conference Historians be authorized to publish a history of the Conference in accord- ance with the plans in their report and explained by H. N. Herrick. The motion carried.

Sale of Church Property. — On motion of M. S. Marble, the Trustees of the Sycamore Church, on the Sims Charge, were authorized to sell the Church property, and the money be given to the parsonage fund of that charge.

M. S. Marble moved that the New York Conference be requested to restore to Conference membership Newton Wray, with a view to immediate transfer to this Conference. Dr. Parr spoke to the question, after which, on motion, the question was referred to the Committee on Conference Re- lations.

Introduced. — C. C. Edwards and J. A. Sargent, of the In- diana Conference, were introduced to the Conference.

Joint Committee on Education, — The Joint Committee on Education presented its report by L. M. Edwards, which, on motion, was adopted. (See Reports.)

Dan B. Brummitt, Editor of the Bpworth Herald, was in- troduced and spoke in the interest of that paper.

H. N. Herrick presented a resolution concerning the In- diana Centennial, which, on motion, was adopted. (See Res- olutions.)

Leave of Absence. — Leave of absence was granted L. J. Naftzger for the sessions after to-day noon.

Twenty-third Question, — The Twenty-third Question, "Who are the Supernumerary Preachers f" was called. The fol-

Hunt. The following were changed from Efifective to Supernumerary : E. C. Hallman, F. J. Speckien. When the name of C. B. Dougherty was called, on motion of C. E. Line, his relation was changed from Supernumerary to Effective, and on motion of W. B. Freeland, the relation of L. P. Pfeifer was changed from Supernumerary to Retired.

L. M. Edwards moved that all men in detached service, and others living outside the Conference, be requested to furnish their addresses with street numbers, that they may be published in the Year-Book. Carried.

On motion of T. M. Guild, the Bishop was requested to appoint A. H. Hirsh to be Professor in Ursinus College, Col- legeville, Pa.

Fifth Question. — The Fifth Question, "Who have been Re- ceived on Trial?" was called, (a) In the Studies of the First Year? The following were introduced to the Conference, re- ported in their studies by the Registrar, recommended by the Committee on General Qualifications, represented by their District Superintendents, and Admitted On Trial in the Con- ference in the Studies; of the First Year: Mont M. Thornburg from the Fort AVayne District ; Valorous L. Clear from the Goshen District Conference ; Leslie A. Hall from the Quar- terly Conference at Miami and Anoka; Jesse M. Jordan from the Sheridan Quarterh^ Conference; True S. Haddock from the Salamonia Quarterly Conference ; Fitz-James Robins from the Highland Avenue (Marion) Quarterly Conference; Leslie O. Winslow from the Warren Circuit Quarterly Conference.

On motion of the Secretary, a collection was ordered to be taken to meet the expenses of printing the blank reports for the pastors, and other items of expense incurred since last Conference.

The collection was taken, which amounted to $45.63, and paid to the proper persons.

The Bishop presented the greetings of J. J\L and Airs. Cause to the Conference, and, on motion, the Secretary was requested to reply.

C. E. Line called the attention of the Conference to the serious illness of Bishop Bristol, and, on motion, the Confer- ence by rising- vote asked the Secretary to express the sym- pathy of the Conference to Mrs. Bristol.

On motion of W. B. Freeland, the case of R. T. Laslie was reported to the Board of Stewards as necessitous.

Conference Corporation. — On motion of W. A. Griest, the following- were elected officers of the Conference Corporation : President, L. J. Naftzger; Vice-President, T. M. Guild; Sec- retary, D. V. Williams ; Treasurer, P. J. Albright.

Marsh Will. — J. W. Cain called the attention of the Con- ference that it had become the beneficiary by the provisions in a will of the late James Marsh, Marshall County, Ind.

W. E. Hogan was asked the Disciplinary Questions and admitted into the Conference.

Program Committee. — On motion of the Secretary, the Superintendent of the Fort Wayne District and the pastor of the First Church, Auburn, were made a Committee on Pro- gram for next year.

On motion of J. W. Cain, this Committee was requested to provide anniversary services for the Conference claimants, if possible, some evening of the next session.

The Bishop appointed the following to be continued as members of the Joint Commission on Education: W. W. Mar- tin, L. M. Edwards, C. U. Wade.

Triers of Appeals. — The Bishop appointed the following Triers of Appeals: C. U. Wade, H. N. Herrick, A. G. Neal, E. L. Semans, L. J. Naftzger.

Reports.— The Committee on Army and Navy made re- port, which was adopted. (See Report.)

J. A. Beatty made report in the case of W. E. McCarty, which had been referred to him. On his motion W. E. Mc- Carty w^as passed in character.

St. Paul's Church, Elkhart. — The Secretary read some resolutions formulated by the Cabinet concerning St. Paul's Church, Elkhart, which, on motion, w^ere adopted. (See Res- olutions.)

Sale of Property. — On motion of W. B. Freeland, permis- sion was granted for the sale of Fifth Street (Richmond) Church property, the proceeds to be used within the charge.

On motion of the Secretary, it was ordered that when we adjourn, we adjourn to meet at 2.30 this afternoon. The Bishop appointed C. U. Wade to preside.

R. J. Wade and O. A. Trabue were appointed a committee to solicit names to finance the publication of the Conference History. •

Committee on Temperance made report, which was adopted. (See Reports.)

On motion of P. E. Powell, the Secretary was instructed to write a letter of approval of the policy of the Chicago Record-Herald in excluding liquor advertisements from its columns.

Committees were called, announcements made, and after the singing of the doxology the benediction was pronounced by E. L. Semans.

Custodian. — W. W. Martin introduced a resolution of ap- preciation of the custodian of the local church, Mr. Frank Breckon, which was adopted, and a collection was ordered for his benefit, which amounted to $17, and which was pre- sented to him by the Bishop in fitting words, to which the custodian made a suitable reply.

On motion of H. N. Herrick, the Conference authorized the selection of a Committee on Financing and Publishing Con- ference History. The following were appointed by the Bishop : H. N. Herrick, W. D. The Bishop announced that Secretary Daniels of the United States Navy had issued an order prohibiting the use of wines and all intoxicating liquors in all the departments of the navy. The Conference sang the long-meter doxology, and the Chairman of the Temperance Committee was instructed to amend his report and send suitable appreciation in the name of the officers of the Conference to Secretary Daniels.

On motion of R. J. Wade, the Bishop was requested to appoint W. W. Sweet to a professorship in DePauw Uni- versity. The names of L. H. Murlin and F. W. Hannan to l)e added in the proper place in the report of the Committee on Education.

Stewards' Report. — L. M. Krider, Chairman, and David Wells, Secretar)^, made reports for the Board of Stewards, which were adopted. (See Reports.)

Complimentary Resolutions. — The Committee on Compli- mentary Resolutions made report, and those referring to the Bishop were adopted by a rising vote, and the others were adopted by acclamation.

L. M. Krider moved the adoption of the resolutions of last year concerning delayed Conference reports, which were adopted. (See Reports.)

Officers of the Conference Brotherhood were nominated l^y the Cabinet and elected.

Statistical Secretary made report of totals, which were ■ordered printed in the tables.

Conference Treasurer made like report, which, on motion, was ordered printed.

Dear Bishop and Brethren: I am glad to report a victorious year. These soldier pastors of Fort Wayne District are a brave company of men. They have hurried in here from the battlefield like a host of Generals just long enough to report and get orders for another cam- paign, and continue the fight

"Till every foe is vanquished And Christ is Lord indeed."

The old men of the district ap- pointed by Bishop McDowell a year ago knew where to begin, and went immediately to business. The ne\\ ones were not long in settling, and they settled for business too. We have kept hard at it all the year. The noble wives and some of the children of these pastors have helped amaz- ingly to win the victories.

Our district received a shock at the sudden passing out r)f Brother Lewis D. Rehl. He fell to his death from the top of a cherry tree the sec- ond of last July. The limb broke un- derneath his weight and dashed him tar a distance of about twenty feet, his J- "• •'^^^tty. head striking the cement walk, caus- ing concussion of the brain, and death resulted three hours later. He was visiting his parents at Napoleon, Ohio, and taking a few days of much-needed rest. Brother Rehl was one of God's chosen work- men, an exceptionally strong preacher, earnest, faithful, systematic, and loved by the brethren of this Conference. I held his Quarterly Conference only three days before his coronation, and the charge was in the best condition it had been for many years. The Communion Sunday was a great occasion. The audience was large and the Di- vine presence clearly manifest. Every charge he served went forward. He was a faithful servant of God. How we miss him! But most of all is he missed by his sorrowing v.'ife and little daughter, Germaine. Let us pray for them.

Brother E. J. Maupin was obliged to go to the hospital about the middle of January for an operation. He was taken from his pulpit to the Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, where he remained for two weeks. After spending a month recuperating, he is getting back to his former vigor and hopes to be stronger than he has been for several years.

Mrs. Crafts, the wife of G. H. Crafts, who took a supernumerary relation a year ago, was obliged to go to Saint Luke's Hospital, Cleve- land, Ohio, and underwent a critical operation for cancer. A com- plete recover}^ is reported.

Mrs. C. Claude Travis, in the Wayne Street parsonage, and Mrs. F. H. Cremean, in the St. Paul parsonage, are both detained from this Conference because of serious illness.

Changes. — The first change occurred at New Haven. Alda R. Gilliam, appointed to supply the charge, did so for two Sundays, but on account of overwork during the winter his health failed, and he was obliged to give it up. A. G. Bryan, a local preacher of East Liberty, Ohio, was secured. He served eight months and was re- leased, and Chauncey King, one of the old reliables, brought the year's work to a fine close. So popular is he with his people that the fourth Quarterly Conference requested that he serve another year. J. Orr Powell, stationed at Scottsburg, was transferred from the In- diana Conference to take up the work of the sorrowing people at Ossian, occasioned by the death of their much loved pastor, Lewis D. Rehl. After some delay Henry E. Little, a local preacher from Tennessee, was secured to supply Fort Wayne Circuit. After serving four months he wearied of us and returned to the sunny South. Alda R. Gilliam, much loved by this people and at their request, came and successfully completed the year. J. O. Hochstedler, of Bobo Charge, and Karl R. Thompson, of Decatur Circuit, were granted a release by Bishop McDowell to go to Boston Theological Seminary. Guy H. Black, a student of Garrett Theological Seminary, was secured for Bobo and has done a remarkable work in seven months. He is rec- ommended to be received into the Conference. Joseph Grimes was transferred from the Indiana Conference and assigned to Decatur Circuit. The charge is well pleased with his work and unanimously invited him to return. F. V. Westhafer, of Harlan, was granted a release to attend school, and S. I. Zechiel was transferred from the South Kansas Conference and has done a fine work in closing out the year. He has had the best revival the charge has had for many years, and the people are enthusiastic for his return.

Spiritual Awakening and Membership. — The greatest spiritual awakening of all the years has swept the Churches of the district the past few months. There have been converted and reclaimed 2,121. W. T. Arnold, pastor at First Church. Bluffton, reports 320 of this number, with a gain in membership of 215. Evangelist Johnson first gave valuable help in a meeting where 70 were converted. The Bob Jones Meeting, in January, stirred the city of Bluffton and the country for many miles around. J. Orr Powell, pastor at Ossian, reports 262, and 225 accessions. This will make a membership in this two-point circuit of 600, and will pay a salary next year of $1,200. B. F. Horna- day, pastor at Orland, reports 200, and" 107 accessions, making an increase of more than 50 per cent. J. E. Coffin, pastor at Pennyille, reports 200, and 73 accessions. A. C. Hoover, 190, and 75 accessions.

C. Claude Travis, Wayne Street, 70 conversions and 105 accessions. The Kerr brothers were the evangelists in this meeting, and the Church received a great uplift. Auburn, F. F. Thornburg, pastor, 80, and 56 accessions. He had the assistance of J. W. Oborn, one of our Conference evangelists. D. A. J. Brown, Poneto, loi. Because of an over- count last year, Monroe suffers a loss of 49, and Leo a loss of 20. Both charges made an actual gain. For the same reason First Church, Bluffton. makes a gain of 155, when it should be 215. The net gain in membership is t,oio.

Building and Improvements. — Three new parsonages were built this year. At Pennville the old parsonage was in such bad repair that "Brother Coffin and family did not move into it, but proceeded at once to rebuild. The old house was put on a new foundation, a sec- ond story added, tore out the partitions and remodeled the interior, beautifully decorated and lighted it, excavated for a basement, and put in a furnace. The pastor and family now enjoy one of the most modern parsonages in the district, at a cost of $1,960.

Hoagland has long since felt the need of a new parsonage. Im- mediately after Conference the Trustees sold the old one for $r,ooo and built an eight-room, modern house with an up-ground cellar, and a new barn, all at a cost of $1,770.

After this they went immediately to the task of remodeling their church at Hoagland. They made a radical change in the plan of the church, putting the pulpit on the side, building an extension on the opposite side, heating with furnace, putting in art glass windows, and beautifully decorating the interior. This was done at a cost of $2,500. The i6th of last November this church was reopened. Bishop IDavid H. Moore, preaching morning and evening, easily raising the money. Rev. C. Claude Travis preached an excellent sermon in the afternoon, at which service the District Superintendent rededicated the church. Rev. E. L. English is the happy pastor.

The parsonage of St. Paul, Fort Wayne, was no longer sufficient to meet the needs of this growing Church. The Board of Trustees sold it and applied the proceeds to the building of a splendid, modern, eight-room house, equipped with electric light fixtures of rare beauty The entire cost, $3,000. The securing of this splendid preacher's home is only one of the many fine things Dr. F. H. Cremean and his wife have done for this Church.

One year ago last February our church at Ashley burned. This heroic people, while the smoke was going up from the burning embers, was busy maturing their plans to rebuild. They built on the old foundation, but better and more modern, at a cost of $5,000. Daniel Rinesmith, one of the Trustees, took the contract and thereby saved them large expenditures of money. Dr. W. D. Parr was called and raised the needed amount of money, and solemnly dedicated the church to the worship of Almighty God.

Garrett is now building a fine church to cost not less than $30,000. The 19th of last October it was the privilege of the District Super- intendent to lay the cornerstone. The walls are now up. and it is almost ready for the roof. Charles Tinkham is the pastor, atid the Church keeps increasing his salary each year.

Wayne Street Church, Fort Wayne, has spent $3,200 in lowering the organ, redecorating, and making this one of the most attractive auditoriums in the city. Here Rev. C. Claude Travis preaches to one of the finest congregations in our Conference. They unaniinously invited him to return for the sixth year, at an increase in salary.

First Church, Fort Wayne, has installed a steam-heating plant at a cost of $1,900. Dr. D. H. Guild is skillfully meeting the situation.

Trinity Church, Fort Wayne, has completed repairs costing $1,870. Rev. T. M. Hill, the pastor, reports a membership of 520.

New Haven, for several years at a standstill, has taken a new

start. They have expended $1,000 in putting in a basement, installing two furnaces, and decoratint; the auditorium. Rev. Chauncey King is now their pastor.

Coesse has expended $1,043 i'l repairs, putting in a bascnu'iit. a furnace, and redecorating the auditorium. Rc\. I'". }'. jMlmson is the pastor and leader in this enterprise.

Ceylon, a small Church on the Geneva Circuit, has been nicely repaired at an expense of $275. Sister Hoover, the pastor's wife, saw how sadly this ]K'0])le were neglected, gathered them together, reorganized them, repaired their church, and now they have one of the best Sunday schools and congregations on the charge.

Under the leadership of Rev. John R. Klson, the pastor, Epworlli Church, Bluiifton, has been moved from an undesirable location and placed on a prominent street three squares north. It has been cleaned, repaired, and put in an attractive condition. The cost was $560. A revival followed, with 30 conversions.

Mt. Hope Church, on the Bobo Charge, has been remodeled and enlarged at a cost of $1,925. Rev. Guy H. ijlack came to this charge last September and soon led them to see thej^ were able. The work was undertaken, brought to successful completion, and now they have a splendid church, well equipped for all their work. Sunday, .March 22d, Dr. W. D. Parr was called, and brought them across to linancial victor}-.

Shinn's Chapel, near Alontpelier, had gone into disuse. The win- dows were out, the plastering was off, and nothing left but a shell. Brother Bills and I went out last summer and urged the people to repair, and they responded by doing it, and now thej- have a good, respectable church. The^- now have a good Sunday school and regu- lar church services.

Alonroeville redecorated their church, put in the indirect system, making it a real beaut}' and costing them $78^,-

Auburn expended $845 completing the extension of their church, begun last year. This included redecorating the interior, a costl}'^ floor-covering of linoleum, putting in a spacious basement, and in- stalling a steam-heating plant. The}- are expecting to build a large addition next year for Sunday school purposes. They are now in- viting this Conference to the hospitality of their homes and the com- fort of their beautiful church in this aggressive, growing county seat. Of course j-ou wall come.

Other Churches have made smaller repairs, as follows: Angola, $125; First Church, Bluffton, $710; First Church, Decatur, $it8; De- catur Circuit, $100; .Simpson Church, Fort Wayne, $150; Fremont, $158; Geneva, $50; Hamilton, $155; Harlan, $94; Huntertown, $300; Leo, $532; Monroe, $510; Montpelier, $480; Orland. $481; Ossian, $175; Poneto, $75; Plrst Church, Portland, $90; Spencerville, $97; Woodburn. $125; York, $142; total expenditures, $46,324.

Debts Paid. — Paid on old indebtedness, $13,325, as follows: Au- burn, $400; St. Paul, Fort Wayne, $1,783; Simpson, Fort Wayne. .$4,600; Geneva, $roo; Hamilton, $247; Montpelier, $1,000; Ossian, $2,200; Poneto, $392; Portland, $800; Portland Circuit, $1,000. A few others with smaller amounts.

Finances. — The best thing we have to report on finance is the New Financial Plan. Wayne Street Church, Fort Wayne, w^as the first in the district to adopt it. Several more of the larger Churches soon followed. We have pushed it hard all the year. Every charge on the district has now adopted it and is w^orking it.

The salaries of the pastors have been increased $1,300 and paid more promptl}^ than ever before.

Our benevolences are likewise sharing in this great increase. The

pastors' reports insure more than $5,000 for Foreiijn, and more than $4,000 for Ffome Missions, besides special .sjifts. This will be an in- crease of $1,700 for the cause of IMissions over Inst year. All other benevolences show a like increase with Missions. This is just the be- ginning of the larger increase to come through this New Financial Plan.

Twentjveight charges report a good increase in their benevolences this year, five pulled down, and four pulled even. Eight charges re- port all benevolences in full. First Church. Riuffton. not only re- ports all benevolences in full, but reports a total of $6,244.

Church Papers. — The pastors have faithfully continued the can- vass for our Church jiapers. Thej' report 1.105 Western Christian Advocates, about 50 other Advocates, and 400 Ej) worth Heralds.

Preachers' Aid Society. — The district made a vigorous and sys- tematic appeal in the interest of our Preachers' Aid Society. We launched the campaign at the meeting of the pastors and District Stewards in May. In addition to sending out the pastors, we had the valuable assistance of Dr. C. U. \\'ade. Dr. W. D. Parr, Rev. J. W. Cain, and A. B. Cline. Earnest appeals were made, and we have pledged $6,606. and already paid $2,165. ^^ e expect to continue the campaign until Fort Wayne District reaches the full $10,000.

Church Organizations. — We have 92 Sunday schools, with a total enrollment of about 15,000. These schools are well organized and use our literature. Their offerings to ^Missions reaches a total of $2,343.

The pastors report 44 Epworth Leagues, with an enrollment of 1,882. These young people pledged to Missions, for the support of Dr. E. O. Ernsberger, a little over $1,300. Several old chapters have been revived and reorganized this year. Miss Tone Easlej- is the effi- cient District President.

The Junior League work is encouraging and advancing. Our largest League is still at Trinity Church, Fort Wayne, superintended by Mrs. T. M. Hill, who is also the District Superintendent. The en- rollment for the district is 1,250.

We have 57 Ladies' Aid Societies, reporting receipts for the year's work of $12,512. an increase of inore than $2,000 over last year.

The Woman's Home and Foreign Missionary Societies have also made a good advance. The Home Society has raised $2,066, and the Foreign Society $2,674.

We have five active Methodist Brotherhoods. Our men are work- ing as never before, but they do not stick to organized Brotherhood as they should. The great Methodist M<>n's Convention at Indianapolis gave our men a new .and larger vision.

District Meetings. — We held three great district meetings within ihe year, be-ides the meeting of the District Stewards and pastors, at which time we had a splendid program. The Epworth League was held in June at Geneva. In October we held a One Day ^Missionary Convention in Simpson Church, i^ort Wavne. The speakers were Dr. George R. Grose, Dr. E. H. Richards.' and Dr. Fred B. Fisher.

It would be difficult to describe our District Conference. Ever\-- body present put it in the superlative degree. The announcement of such speakers as Dr. George R. Grose, Dr. ^^■. B. HolHngshead. Dr. E. S. Shoemaker, Mrs. Celestine Bernheim, and Bishop Theodore S. Henderson fully justifies the claim. The closing day with Bishop Henderson will ever be precious because of its helpfulness. Our only regret was that we could not have, as we had fondly hoped, our own great leader. Bishop William F. McDowell.

recommended to the Annual Conference to be received on trial, and the latter also for Deacon's Orders.

We have had a good year. Most of us have had the best of all our years. All might have had it so. Best things come high. A Burmese student, some years ago, in contesting with European claimants and candidates, took everything before him. He said, "Everything is possible here to a man who works." Genius has been defined as a capacity for hard work. We must study how to make our efforts count for the largest things. It is not enough to be busy. We must be busy about right things. Resist the temptation to go after small things. Cleopatra said to Mark Antony, "It is not for you to be nshing for gudgeons, but to be taking forts, towns, citadels." We need a ministry who will cease frittering away their time doing things that somebody else could do quite as well, and give themselves to greater and grander tasks to which they have been called from all eternity. The big tasks frighten us and make out of us crouching men. When Peter received the baptism of the Holy Ghost he never again suggested, "I go fishing." They no longer went splashing in the water, wondering where they would find the Master, but became fishers of men. No more failures after this. The big task was sufficient to employ all their time.

Dear Bishop McDowell, the pastors and Superintendent of Goshen District united with North Indiana Conference and world Methodism in thanksgiving to God for sparing your life and bringing you back to health and strength.

After about five weeks of very efficient service on the Corunna Charge, T. G. Godwin, a supply, was obliged, on account of serious illness in the family, to surrender the charge. Rev. J. S. Cain, Re- tired Minister, supplied with great acceptability until the appointment of R. P. Geyer. who took charge about the lirst of September. After several months without a pastor, E. M. Armitage was secured for the Butler Circuit. Jesse Denbo was released from the work of the Warsaw Circuit, September 15th, to attend school. W. V. Mullikin was secured, and went forward with the work. Brother F. A. Reichel- derfer, of Topeka, was released September ist to enter Garrett Bib- lical Institute. Herbert Boase was taken from Wakarusa to Topeka, and J. C. Lawburgh, of the Indiana Conference, was transferred and stationed at Wakarusa.

Eleven Retired Ministers reside within the bounds of the dis- trict. Brothers Lash, Welch, Paschall, Wones, and Hasty have been in feeble health. Brother H. C. Smith was suddenly called to his crowning on Sunday night. July 27, 1913, while paying a visit to his nephew near Santa Fe, his boyhood home. He preached with great liberty and power at the evening service, returned to his nephew's home, and quietly on the wings of sweet sleep passed to the Church Triumphant. The Rev. A. G. Neal, of First Church, Warsaw, pastor of the family, assisted by several brethren of the Conference, had charge of the impressive funeral services. We bespeak for Sister Smith, the devoted wife, the prayer of the entire Conference. In the

early spring the death angel came to the parsonage home at Avilla and accompanied the saintly mother of the pastor's wife, Mrs. Nancy Bassett, to her heavenly home. Brother and Sister Lamport, who had cared for the aged mother so faithfully, took the dear old body to Bristol, her old home, where appropriate funeral services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. C. B. Croxall.

With but two or three exceptions the pastors' families have been free from severe illness. Sister Shaw, the wife of our pastor at Howe, passed through a severe illness, but is now ap- parently in usual health. Sister Dixon, of Etna Green, was also quite seriously ill for weeks, but is now in a greatly im- proved condition. Sweet babies came during the year to biess the lives and homes of Brothers and Sisters Loveless, of Wawaka; Bash, of Waterloo; Law- burgh, of Wakarusa; Shaw, of Howe; Geyer, of Corunna; and Cloud, of Syra- cuse.

Dr. Wade's Wedding.^Wednesday evening, August 6th, occurred the mar- riage of Rev. R. J. Wade, D. D., pastor of Trinity Church, Elkhart, to Miss Myr- tle Mudge, the accomplished daughter of Air. and Mrs. E. L. Mudge, of the same city. The ceremony was performed in the auditorium of the church by the father of the groom, Dr. C. U. Wade, of

Greencastle, assisted by the District Superintendent. An informal re- ception followed in the parlors of the parsonage, where Dr. and Mrs. Wade received the heartiest congratulations. Mrs. Wade was reared in Elkhart and brought up in old Trinity, in which she has been an excellent worker for several years.

On Thanksgiving evening, in the beautiful Christian home of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Mason, Bluffton, Ind., occurred the marriage of Rev. A. H. Bachus, pastor of Lagrange Charge, to Miss Nellie Mason, an earnest, devoted, capable member of the First Church, of Blufifton. The District Superintendent had the pleasure of officiating on this delightful ocasion.

Departmental Work of the Churches. — The Sunday schools, 81 in number, have a total enrollment of more than 12,000, and are in the best condition, both in city and country, I have known them to be. With but two or three exceptions they are organized into missionary societies. All use the literature of the Church. A district institute was held in First Church, Goshen, on Wednesday, July i6th. Dr. Hartman and Miss Thomason represented the Board of Sunday Schools. Mr. W. E. Carpenter gave vision of what it means to de- velop a truly great school such as he has at Brazil, and Bishop Mc- Dowell brought the day to a climax with his winged words on "Life and the Bible." Among the schools which have been fully standard- ized, the one at First Church, Mishawaka, easily ranks first. Three teacher-training classes are in operation; two in connection with the regular session of the school, the third being led by the pastor, Loren M. Edwards, during the week. The combined membership is about 75. Not only has the graded work been introduced, but the teachers have been graded as well. Men teachers are employed in all boys' classes, and no man who uses tobacco is allowed to teach in the Sunday school. The Junior Department is admirably equipped and is pro-

Offerings for Missions, Board of Sunday Schools, and Lhddrcn s Day Fund are in advance of former years. There has also been a ■^ood increase in the number of conversions in the schools.

Epworth League Chapters. — Most of our Epworth League chap- terN are loyal and doins? good work in a larger. way than ever before. A substantial increase in membership is reported by the Senior League chapters. The Junior League chapters have not quite kept pace. The chapters of this district continue to support Dr. Cartney, mission- ar> to China. Fourteen hundred dollars was pledged for this worker. The district convention was held at Bourbon, June 24th and 25th. Bishop Bristol greatly pleased the convention in his masterly address, and President Grose, of DePauw, won the admiration of the great Epworthian host the second evening.

The Methodist Brotherhood. — While we have only eight Brother- hoods on the district, they have done the best work this year ever done by this organization. The truth is, men are interested in the large things of the Kingdom to-day as never before. Christian men are putting business into religion — business into- local Church matters, business into forward movements of all kinds, business into great phi- lanthropic enterprises of the hour, real business zeal into the work of evangelism; in a Avord, making it their chief business to help Jesus Christ save the world. The same royal host of consecrated laymen can be trusted by the General Conference Commission on Evangelism. They want to know "how." They are determined to know "how.'' They are beginning to know "how." Back to the secret place of prayer; back to the mourner's bench; back to the intelligent, God- inspired preaching of the gospel, which brings conviction to the care- less sinner far from God; back to a rejoicing with the angels over re- penting, confessing, believing, receiving Christ-saved souls; back to the impulse which moves the saved man out after his own brother sinner; back to the truth that a man is saved to be a savior of his fellow-men; back to every member his own evangelist; back to co- partnership with Jesus Christ in the greatest work to which, a man can gi\e his best self.

Boy Scouts. — The Boy Scout Movement is gaining strength. This work has been undertaken on a large scale in Kendallville, Millard Pell, pastor. An expert worker was brought to the city for the sum- mer season. Tie gripped the boys of the entire cit\'; so much so that the business men became greatly interested and volunteered to sup- port the work.

Woman's Work. — The Toadies' Aid Societies are doing excellent work in every way. They have raised more than $t2,ooo during the year. The Woman's Home and Foreign Missionary Societies have been more than usually active and, of course, have increased the number of societies and raised and disbursed more money than for- merly.

Finances. — The first event 01 the Conference year was the annual meeting of the pastors and Stewards held at Goshen. May Toth._ At this meeting the campaign in behalf of the Endowment Fund of the Preachers' Aid Society was formally launched. The men responded to the filling of the room where the banquet was held. The chief speaker for the occasion was the Hon. Marvin Campbell, of South Bend. Other laymen, with Dr. R. J. Wade, District Afissionary Sec- retary, and the District Superintendent, gave brief addresses. A defi- nitely planned itinerary had been arranged, calling for special services and canvass on May nth and iSth. The men of the district, with the assistance of J. W. Cain, Secretary of the Preachers' Aid Society,

Drs. C. U. Wade and W. D. Parr, and Brother A. P.. Cline, of Blnff- tnn, went after it, with the result that on the night of Alay iSth the victory was won, the $10,000 was ours. A little additional effort advanced the district to the $12,000 mark.

Tuesday, April 29th, the old parsonage at Corunna was sold, and September 15th a more modern house near the Church was pur- chased, and soon after occupied bj' Pastor Geyer and family.

Soon after Conference work was begun on the church at North Webster, W. T. Daly, pastor. A roomy basement was put under the entire building, divided into furnace room, kitchen, and dining-room. The building was \eneered with first-class brick, tower, and entrance at corner, new scats, carpet, wall decoration, etc., at an expense of about $6,000. The District Superintendent officiated at the reopening, Sunday, August lotli. So well had the pastor managed affairs that less than $1,500 was heeded to provide for this improvement. And so well did the people respond that $1,650 was subscribed. Dast year the Morris Chapel church, on this charge, was rebuilt at a cost of about the same amount.

Early in the year A. L. Lamport, pastor at Avilla, began the re- building of the Avilla church. The building was raised; full basement, with all modern appointments, put in; tower and entrance placed at corner; completely refinished, and refurnished inside and painted on outside. The entire cost of this improvement was $2,800. The church was reopened by Bishop Moore. Sunday, September 28th. Brother Lamport is invited to return for the third year, v\^ith the promise, based on an every-member canvass at both appointments, of an ad- vance in salary from $800 to $t,ooo.

The new church at Cromwell, Wawaka Charge, W. E. Loveless, pastor, begun last year, was dedicated NoA-ember 16th. Dr. W. D. Parr was called to preach the sermon and raise the $2,000 needed. A happy people united with Dr. Parr and a jubilant pastor in im pressive dedicatory services. The cost of the church was, in round numbers, $6,000.

At Middlebury. J. W. Bowen, pastor, the church was rebuilt and thoroughly modernized at a cost of $3,000. The District Superinteml- ent officiated at the services, held November j^d, .\'ine hundred and forty-three dollars was required to complete payment. The people sul)- scribed $r,i02. Five years ago the pastor found both congregations greatly discouraged, an old dilapidated parsonage, botli church build- ings in a poor condition, a $700 salary-. During this time he has built a modern parsonage at a cost of $2,600, rebuilt the Shipshewana church at a cost of $[,650, and e\i)ended on the Middlebury church $3,000. The salary was advanced from $700 to $800, and ne.xt year goes up to the rouiul $1,000. Good revivals have attended his ministry on this charge, and this year he reports a gain in membership of 30 per cent.

The recently rebuilt church at Howe, Roscoe Shaw, pastor, quite badly damaged by lire in the late winter, has been repaired and is again in use by the congregation.

The South Milford church, L. W. Kemper, pastor, was rebuilt and modernized, with a view to making it not only more commodious and inviting, but also to assist in solving the country Church prob- lem by making it a country-side social center. On January nth the District Superintendent reopened the church. The entire cost of this improvement was about $1,100.

At Bourbon, R. W. Stoakes, pastor, a fine $17,000 church is in process of erection and will be ready for dedication early next Con- ference year. On the Benton and Richville Charge, organized this year, A. A. Turner, pastor, $1,375 has been subscribed for a new par-

sonage. At Osceola, Preston Polhemus, pastor, the Ladies' Aid So- ciety led in the purchase of a house and lot adjacent to the Church property. The house and lot cost $650.

Other improvements amounting to $100 and over have been made on the following charges: Bristol, C. B. Croxall, pastor, for new hardwood floor in auditorium, and other repairs, $320; Etna Green, Edwin Dixon, pastor, $530; Goshen, First Church, R. L. Semans. pastor, $1,455, general repairs on church building; Howe, Roscoe Shaw, pastor, $140; Inwood, W. E. Hogan, pastor, $170; Kendallville, Millard Pell, pastor, $117; La Grange, A. H. Bachus, pastor, $360; Mishawaka, L. M. Edwards, pastor, $100; Nappanee, Silas Gates, pas- tor, $150; Syracuse, C. A. Cloud, pastor, $400; Valentine, J. K. Wyant, pastor, $450; Wakarusa, J. C. Lawburgh, pastor, $255; Warsaw, A. G. Neal, pastor, $200; Warsaw Circuit, W. V. Mullikin, pastor, $235; Wolcottville, L R. Godwin, pastor, $231. Total for new work and im- provements, $47,345. The total valuation of church and parsonage property reaches $705,650. Amount of debts, $23,884. Net property, $681,766.

Special Days. — -Elkhart County Methodist Day was observed at the beautiful park in Goshen, August 12th. Mr. E. E. Starbuck, of Goshen, representing the Goshen District Laymen's Association, as- sisted by a very competent committee, made all necessary arrange- ments for the day. A fine musical contest was greatly enjoyed by the people. A picnic dinner was the order at 12 o'clock, and at 2 P. M., Dr. W. D. Parr gave the address of the day.

Settlement Day. — Settlement Day meeting was held at Pierceton, December 4th. A large majority of the charges reported salaries paid in full to date, and a like majority reported they were working the every-member canvass and duplex-envelope system. The salaries for next year are in most cases practically fixed now, and in nearly every instance backed by the every-member canvass.

Elkhart Methodist Day. — This day was to have been observed Jan- uary 25th, but the serious illness of Bishop McDowell made it neces- sary to postpone until March 8th. The day was really devoted to city church extension work, with the debt-ridden St. Paul Church as the chief objective. Bishop W. F. Anderson, of Cincinnati, came in Bishop McDowell's stead and preached three strong, inspiring ser- mons; one at Trinity Church in the morning, another at Simpson at 2.30 P. M., and the third at St. Paul's at night. Dr. James Rowe, Corresponding Secretary of the Chicago Home Mission and Church Extension Society, came on Friday night and generously gave the three nights and two days in the management of the finances. The totals on Sundaj' night footed up in round numbers $15,000, and still there remains about $15,000 of debt, for which no provision has been made. The heroic St. Paul membership have done their best in every way, giving more, much more, per capita than any other Church in the district. This church building is worth more to-day than it cost.

Salaries. — Twelve charges advanced pastors' salaries at the begin- ning of the year. This advance amounted to $2,350. The advance now promised for next year reaches $2,600. The average salary, including the District Superintendent, now paid the effective men who are mem- bers of the Conference is $1,210. The per cent of advance in other ministerial support compares favorably with the advance in pastors' salaries.

Benevolences. — Thirty-three charges report an advance over last year, two report less, and three about the same. The total advance is $13,407. For missions alone thirty charges show gains ranging from $10 to $300. The benevolence conventions were held throughout the district in late September. I am sure all rejoice because of the re-

suits now in hand; $39,410 contributed for benevolence, and $157,964 for all causes. The average contribution per member for all purposes ranges from $2.73 to $52.50.

Revivals and Membership. — The spirit of evangelism has been manifested in an unusual way throughout the district. I have not known of such interest in the country sections for years. Several of our country Churches have been completely made over. In both country and town large numbers have been reached and brought into the Kingdom. Thus, by pastors and laymen the work of evangelism has been pressed as never before during my time on the district. For the most part the special meetings have been conducted by the pas- tors who have thought it out in advance, made a constituency roll, rallied the Church men, and gone after what was at the very door. The program of the Commission on Evangelism has been explained and urged all over the district in congregational Quarterly Confer- ences. The pastors have seconded the effort. Evangelist Jones, of the Southland, conducted a tabernacle meeting in Warsaw in which nearly a thousand professed conversion. Our pastor, A. G. Neal, conserved the results and gathered in over two hundred new members, a 28 per cent gain. Under the inspiration of this great work the old church is outgrown. Plans are now adopted for the erection of a new $50,000 church. The Kerr brothers conducted a meeting at Butler, W. H. Brightmire. pastor, in which 130 were converted. City Mis- sionary Nipper, of Ft. Wayne, assisted Brothers Bowen, of Middle- bury, and llawburgh, of Wakarusa, with gratifying results — about fifty conversions at each place, mostly men. Brother Hornaday, our pastor at Orland, conducted a meeting at Shipshewana, on the Middlebury Charge, which resulted in between fifty and sixty conversions and a quickened Church. Brother Brightmire did good service at St. Mark's, Goshen, T. F. Freeh, pastor. Conference Evangelist E. B. Westhaver, of Muncie, conducted meetings at the Scott and Prairie appointments on the Howe Charge, Roscoe Shaw, pastor. This was a great work, both Churches and communities were thoroughly aroused, fifty-five professed conversion. In the late winter a Macedonian cry came from Mango. Brother and Sister Bachus, of La Grange, responded to the call by conducting a series of meetings, which resulted in thirty conversions, the organization of a class, a chapter of the Epworth League, a Sunday school, and an enthusiastic Ladies' Aid Society. More than three hundred dollars is subscribed for the support of a pastor for next year, and lots for a new church donated. Seventeen hundred and ninety-three conversions, aside from the tabernacle meetings at Warsaw, have been reported by the pastors of the dis- trict. The pastors reporting the largest numbers are: Mishawaka, Dr. Edwards, pastor, his own evangelist, 200 conversions, 322 acces- sions; Inwood, a two-point circuit, W. E. Hogan, pastor, his own evan- gelist, 150 conversions; Valentine, J. K. Wyant, 94; Bourbon, R. W. Stokes, 85; Trinity, Elkhart, R. J. Wade, 81; Simpson Memorial, Elk- hart, W. A. Huflfman, 76; Wawaka, W. E. Loveless, 79; Osceola. Pres- ton Polhemus, 65; North Webster, W. T. Daly, 60; Wolcottville, I. R. Godwin, 50: Goshen Circuit, V. L. Clear, 43; Bristol, C. B. Crox- all, 39. In addition to his own work. Brother Croxall went out to a schoolhouse and conducted a series of meetings resulting in the or- ganization of a class of twenty-five members. Nappanee, Silas Gates, 30; Albion, Robert Burns, 21; Leesburg, J. C. Graham; 21. Other pastors report from 3 to 18 conversions. The accessions to the mem- bership reach 2,029. The percentage of gain ranges from i per cent to 76 per cent. I am glad to report for Dr. J. W. Oborn, Conference Evangelist, residing at Warsaw, nearly one thousand conversions for the year.

CGHclusion. — h'or myself, after more than three decades of service, I never felt prouder of the Church than 1 do to-day. Our pastors stand where others have failed; our noble laymen are loyal amid se- verest tests. I have sometimes thought, when sleep has taken its flight, of these toilers and rejoiced with them in their victories and wept with them in their sorrows, f would rather cast my lot with these comrades of the Cross than to sit at the court of kings.

Bishop and r>rethrcn: At the close of the last Conference session two charges were left without pastors. C. H. Brown, a Retired Min- ister, was secured to supply Florida, an<l his services have been of great value to this little charge. The new Church just organized at Anoka was made a part of the Miami Charge, and Leslie A. Hall, of Garrett Biblical Institute, Avas appointed the pastor.

Walter A. Fonts, who had been appointed to West Middleton, was married to Miss Bessie Levering, of Terre Haute, a classmate in DePauw, on the 27th of May. He graduated from Garrett Biblical Institute the 28th of May, was stricken with typhoid fever on Thanks- giving Day, and lingered until P'ebruary 7th, when he closed his career on earth to enter the larger and fuller life above. He was one of the best equipped and most promising 3'oung men in our ranks. His charge was so well pleased with his services that the\- increased his salary $150 and paid it in full to the end of the year. He had arranged for all his benevolent collections with a good in- crease. Not only does this charming young wife mourn the loss of a husband, but we all mourn the loss of this princely minister of Jesus Christ.

The wife of our retired Brother W. S. Stewart went home to heaven December 8th, after a most beautiful and useful life of seventy-

five years. She was a capable and devoted woman to the Church she Joved, a Sunday school teacher of rare ability.

On May 5, 1913, a bright little boy came to brighten the parson- age home of Brother and Sister Asay at Sharpsville. The homes of L. G. Jacobs and w^ife, of Roann, and R. M. Bechdolt and wife, of Center, have likewise been blessed.

One of the most gratifying events of the year was the successful dedication of a $27,000 church at Wind- fall. W. E. Hamilton was appointed at the last Conference to be pastor of this charge and work out this diflicult situa- tion. This was a wise appointment. He managed the matter so skillfully that on the 28th of September the Church was ready for dedication and the people ready to pa}^ for it. Dr. W. D. Parr was the needed man to put the crowning- touch upon this great enterprise. He raised $17,000 in good subscriptions and cash. The splendid pipe organ, costing $3,200, was (lonatcd by Elijah Perry, a member of the lUiilding Committee.

■ On the Twelve Mile Charge, C. A. Ijyrt, the pastor, has scored a great vic- tory in rebuilding the church at Bethle- hem. This building was made new, with ample basement and aditional rooms, at a cost of $8,500. This was dedicated September 7, 19 13, by the District Super- intendent, when $3,400 was raised. There

is a strong desire on the part of this old and substantial congregation to be made a station. This charge has greatly prospered under Brother Byrt's pastorate.

The Church organized at Anoka a little over one year ago by the pastor at Market Street, T^ogansport, W. T. Arnold, and brought to new life by a great revival held by Brother and Sister S. J. Mellin- ger, has commenced and completed one of the finest country churches in the district at a cost of $8,800. Leslie A. Hall was the pastor in charge of this good work. The church was dedicated January 25th by the District Superintendent, Avhen $4,150 was raised. Only $2,700 debt remains, and this is covered by first-class subscriptions. They have paid in cash this year $6,Too on the church building, besides $400 for ministerial support. It is their desire to become a station one year hence.

When LeRoy Myers returned from Conference last spring he cnmmenced at once to talk a new church. A subscription was taken, plans secured, and the church is a glorious reality. It was dedicated by Dr. W. D. Parr, March 15th, when $8,300 was raised. These noble people are princely in their giving and heroic in their under- taking. The church cost $14,000 besides the lot on which it stands.

A new church commenced more than two years ago at Skillman, on the Mexico Charge, where O. M. Hunt is now pastor, will be dedi- cated in a few weeks. This patient people have been in the hands of a contractor who is in no hurry.

B.ev. L. G. Jacobs, the pastor at Roann, has reconstructed Sjams- ville church at a cost of $650. Not only has the church structure been reconstructed, but new life has come to the people. Great prosperity has come to the whole charge, that shows itself in deeper spiritual life, larger salary for pastor and benevolent collections paid in full.

The much-needed and long-looked-for new church at Pleasan't Hill, on the Gilead Charge, is now to become a reality. A $2,000 sub- scription has been secured, material bought, and work commenced. C. B. Thomas has been untiring in his efforts to secure this happy state of affairs.
